Updates to City Mask Requirements
Following the recent guidance from the CDC on mask wearing by vaccinated individuals, the mayor rescinded the city’s mask mandate at last night’s city council meeting. Going forward, city buildings, including the library, will encourage but not require mask wearing. Staff will continue to wear masks and we will continue to make disposable masks available for patrons at the entryway but staff should not mention mask-wearing to those who enter without one.

Survey for My Evaluation
Each year as part of my annual evaluation, the library board sends all staff a survey. It’s anonymous and I never see any of the written responses. The board would like responses by Monday, May 17th. The survey is linked below.
E-Magazines
The State Library has added a number of new titles to the Bridges magazine collection including several in other languages. Bridges magazines are always available–i.e. no holds lists–and don’t count against patrons’ checkout limits. Checkout the Bridges magazine collection via the link below.

Current Issues of Magazines will Continue to Circulate
The library will continue to circulate the current issue of magazines.

Hot Picks Back to Default Setting
With our re-opening next week, Hot Picks have been returned to their default status — they are not holdable, have a 2 week/1 week checkout, and are not renewable.
Molly has ordered several new items for the collection. Some of these new items went out with the “regular” collection values, but as patrons return them, the items will no longer fill holds requests.
Direct Book Club Set Questions to Lori Elrick
Lori Elrick is our main contact for questions related to book club sets. When patrons (or other libraries) call with questions, please transfer the calls to x619. Lori works Monday-Friday 12-5, so you may want to inform the caller at other times to leave a voicemail. You can also transfer them to x716 if it’s a book club emergency!
Terra Park Art Walk Board Pick Up
The Johnston Arts Council is hosting an outdoor art walk this summer at Terra Park. The library is the pick-up and drop off site for the boards registrants will paint on. I’ve placed a list of registrants near the boards at the bouncer desk. Each registrant gets one board. Mark the names off the list once they pick up their board.
State Library-provided Online Resource Changes
The following is from the State Library. Given the discontinuing of Transparent Language, I’ll sign us up for Mango languages which is more user-friendly anyway:
What’s Completed, What’s Ahead
Based on discussions and recommendations from the Online Resources Task Force, the State Library is moving forward with the process for securing new online resources related to these topic areas:
- Online Encyclopedia / General Reference Tool
- Homework Help
- Legal Forms
- Business & Residential Directories
- Library Customer Engagement and Training
- Grant Research Tool
Understandably, there is not a one-size-fits-all package of resources that will meet the needs of every Iowa library. But we believe that these types of resources will provide the most benefit to the broadest cross-section of Iowa libraries.
Resources Discontinuing July 1st
As a reminder, the following resources will be discontinued July 1, 2021:
- Gale Databases (including Chilton Library and Opposing Viewpoints)
- Credo
- Transparent Language
- Ebsco Wilson Core Collection
- OCLC FirstSearch (Note: we are working with OCLC to reach an agreeable subscription option for Iowa libraries that wish to remain with FirstSearch. Also, this change does not affect the CatExpress consortium)
We will provide additional reminders and guidance in the coming months to ease the transition to the new resources. Other resources are under different contract timelines and will continue to be offered in FY2022; these include: Bridges, Brainfuse, and Bold360 Chat.
Teen Space Color/Fabric and Chair Options
The YS, PS, and Bouncer desks each have printouts of teen space fabric and chair options for teens to vote on. If you see a teen, ask their opinion and keep the tally on the sheets.
Rod Brown
Rod Brown has resigned from his position in the circulation department. He will be relocating to Omaha later this year. Thanks to Rod for his years of hard work.
Self Evaluations – Updated Link
It’s spring which means…it’s evaluation time. Part of the process is the self evaluation. This is your chance to tell your supervisor what you think you did well in the past year, how you’d like to grow going forward, and what could be done to help make your work or your experience at work better. The self evaluation form is linked below. Please have it to your supervisor by May, 14th. If you’ve been at JPL fewer than 6 months, you are not required to complete a self evaluation yet.
