Masterworks 7 and next season
The final series of the symphony season is this weekend, and we are playing Beethoven’s Overture to Consecration of the House, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, Starburst by Jessie Montgomery, and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorsky. Here is a link for purchasing online access, and you will have 30 days after the live stream to watch it: https://my.desmoinesperformingarts.org/0/6038.
If you would like to attend in person, the concerts will take place Saturday the 7th at 7:30 PM, and Sunday the 8th at 2:30 PM at the Civic Center in downtown Des Moines.
Information about next season is available online. We will be performing Holst’s Planets suite, Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Saint-Saens First Cello Concerto, and much more.
PS Physical Book Displays
Hey all,
Adult physcial book displays have been relocated to pre-Covid locations. The 2 large displays are still in the same spots, but now there is a small display in front of Circ 1 and Circ 2. The third small display is still in the nonfiction aisle in front of the cake pans. Record set locations on Polaris have been changed to reflect new physical locations.
Thanks!
Don Schreiber Photos
Don Schreiber will be picking up his photos sometime this week. They’re under the tan cart behind the checkout desk.
Time Sheets Due Thursday Noon
I won’t be working Friday-Sunday, so I’ll need to work on time sheets on Thursday afternoon. Please have your completed time sheets in the green folder by noon. Thanks.
Self Evaluations
It’s spring which means…it’s evaluation time. Part of the process is the self evaluation. This is your chance to tell your supervisor what you think you did well in the past year, how you’d like to grow going forward, and what could be done to help make your work or your experience at work better. The self evaluation form is linked below. Please have it to your supervisor by May, 15th.

Johnston Commons Park Shelter
The next step in development of the park behind the library is construction of a shelter with restrooms. For those curious what it will look like, the rendering linked below will be presented at Monday’s city council meeting.

Please Update the Driver License Field from Digital
This is a piggyback message to Eric’s intranet post about digital cards
Please update accounts with the driver’s license field marked “digital” with the driver’s license number – please do not leave “digital” in the driver’s license field.
Let me know if you have questions.
Art Dropoff
Julie Jewell will be dropping off artwork today or tomorrow. It can be placed in my office.
Check in challenge
Until May 9, let’s always re-scan our carts of items before preshelving them at check-in. So after you check-in items and examine them for damage/missing pieces, you should have items on a white cart and ready to preshelve. Please scan each item once more to guarantee it has been checked in. You do not need to scan holds again because there wouldn’t be a slip if you hadn’t checked in the item.
I know this is extra work, and I know this will slow us down. My hope is that this exercise will help us gain individual awareness of how and when we are missing items at check-in and improve the user experience at JPL.
I would guess that it will take an extra three to five minutes to re-scan a cart of 60 items – remember you don’t need to check for condition again – just run the barcode through the check-in screen to guarantee every single item that is being shelved/preshelved is checked in.
If your desk schedule allows, you could re-scan your carts of pre shelving at the Checkout Desk during slow periods.
After May 9th, we can discuss the process as a department to decide if double scanning has been helpful.
Ask Molly or Denise if you have questions.
HVAC/Cooling Reminder
Just a reminder that we are waiting on parts to repair our cooling system. Until they arrive, which should be next week, our air conditioning will not work. Tomorrow, like today, will likely be stuffy inside the library. The 7 day forecast from Sunday is cooler.
Meeting Room Policy Change
The library board approved a change to our Meeting Room Policy that outlines how we handle no-shows and last-minute cancellation and reschedules. These additions to the policy are shown in red below:
- Meeting rooms are available during regular library hours. Groups may hold meetings once per calendar month at no charge. A fee of $20.00/hour will be charged for subsequent meetings held in the same calendar month. Once invoiced, failure to pay for meeting room use within 30 days may result in the loss of meeting room privileges.
- No-shows and cancellations or reschedules made less than 24 hours before the meeting time will count as a room use for that month–groups may be billed accordingly. Multiple cancellations or no-shows may result in the loss of meeting room privileges.
All-Staff Meeting Next Thursday
Our bi-monthly all-staff meeting will be held next Thursday at 8:00am in the Large Meeting Room.
Receiving Packages via the Main Entrance
When Amazon, FedEx, etc. deliver packages via the main entrance, you may place them on the bottom shelf of the Holds cart behind the Circ Desk. If they’re too large or too heavy to fit, you can place them on the floor beside the cart.
Lori Elrick will retrieve the packages once per day, Monday-Friday.
Technical Services has a process for checking in materials that staff order, so it’s important to allow TS to go through that process. Even if a package is addressed to a particular staff member, all packages need to go through TS.
If you are a staff member expecting a package, and you don’t want to wait for TS to check it in, it’s acceptable to take your package and send Lori E. a note that you’ve retrieved it yourself. You can send this message by e-mail or use the #Deliveries-from-UPS-et-al channel on Slack.
If you let a delivery person in through the staff entrance, continue to place items on the workroom counter. You’re also welcome to place any other packages on the workroom counter if that’s more convenient.
TS would still appreciate it if you’d post a quick message to #Deliveries-from-UPS-et-al channel on Slack when you receive a package regardless of whether you put it on the bottom shelf of the holds cart or on the workroom counter.
We appreciate all your help receiving packages!
Outdoor camera not working [UPDATED]
[UPDATE] The camera had water damage. A replacement has been ordered.
One of our outdoor cameras (the one that shows the food pantry and the Commons exit doors) is not working. I’ve notified the vendor.
Digital cards not used since reopening will expire in 90 days
Each patron who applied for cards online and still have “Digital” in their driver’s license number field now have a blocking note on their account instructing staff to add a driver’s license number to their account. In addition, those who haven’t used their card since we reopened the building last January have been sent an email stating that their card will expire in 90 days. The email includes information about visiting the library to verify their identity and contact information in order to renew their account.
Eyeglasses
The Lions Club now has an outdoor eyeglass drop-off. We will no longer be collecting eyeglasses. Instead, let donors know that they can drop their glasses anytime at the the Lions Club at 6501 Merle Hay Rd.
Staff Laptop
Staff Laptop 2021 is now available for use. It is in the storage cabinet.
You do not need to use the In House Mode any longer
We are no longer going to scan items found on the black carts or left out on tables or in study rooms using the In House Mode screen of the Check In window.
When you are collecting items that have been left out by library users, please just scan them in the Check In window to make certain the circulation status is In and to verify the shelf location of the item. Then you can put the item in the correct recently returned or pre-shelving area.
Please let your supervisor know if you have any questions.
HVAC
Parts of the HVAC systems on the roof of the building were damaged by hail last year. Those parts were replaced a couple of weeks ago but the workers found other things that need replaced before our air conditioning can be turned back on. I’m hoping that the repairs can be completed before it gets too warm outside–the forecast for the next two weeks looks promising.
