Really? News Literacy Media Training Program on 6/25 Cancelled
The adult Media Literacy Training program scheduled for this Saturday, June 25 is cancelled because of a health thing that came up with the presenter. I have cancelled the event on our calendar and on Facebook. This program did not have registration attached to it, but should you receive calls please pass on this information. Peg will attempt to work with the presenter to reschedule the event, possibly in August or in the fall. Thanks!

Time Sheets Due Early
Hey – I’m going on vacation and won’t be in the office after Wednesday. If at all possible, please turn in your time sheets by Wednesday noon and I’ll work on what I can before I leave Wednesday afternoon. If you can’t get it in before that, Eric will double-check it before taking them to City Hall.

This month’s library board meeting will be the last for Megan Tooker. Emily Betz will start her six year term on the board in July. Emily grew up in Johnston and has been a longtime library user. She worked at the Grimes Public Library from 2010 to 2012. She is currently Business Liaison for Des Moines Area Community College.

I’ve created a Facebook post asking for donations of used J and YA books to give away at outreach events this summer. Until further notice, please put donations of books for kids and teens in the box marked for them next to the food donation bin.
Adult Summer Reading Weekly Prize Winner
Leah Johnson has won this week’s ASR prize, a $10 gift card to Big Acai. The gift card is located at the Ref Desk. Please direct Leah to a PS/YS staff person to pick up her prize.
EZSee Keyboard
The library has purchased a new keyboard that can be used by patrons in the library. A patron with macular degeneration explained that the larger font and the white on black contrast is helpful.
The keyboard is at the Ref Desk on a shelf under the Brother Printer. Power off the public PC the patron wants to use and unplug the existing keyboard. Plug in the EZSee keyboard USB cable and then power up the PC and the keyboard should be recognized.
Art walk paintings
Artists will be dropping off their art walk paintings over the next couple of weeks. They can be placed in my office.
Double Scanning at Check-in
Thank you guys for the extra work of double scanning at check-in over the last month. There has been a big decrease in the number of items found on the shelf that are still checked out.
At this point, I will leave it up to you to decide if you will continue to double scan items. For me, I will continue to double scan just to be safe. I trust you to decide what works best for you. There may be instances where you feel it is best to double scan and instances where you feel it is unnecessary.
If we see an uptick in items on the shelf that have not been checked in, we may return to the practice across the department.
My main takeaways from the last month are:
- Please make sure you are watching the Check-in screen while doing check-in. The scanner will beep even if the item has not been checked in because you are not in Polaris or because your cursor is not in the correct field. Make sure you see that after you scan, the item’s information goes across the Check-in screen.
- Please scan every item you find on a desk, table, or counter through the Check-in screen to make sure it is checked in and to verify the shelf location.
As always, thanks so much and let me know if you have questions.

Extra hours with the Parks Department
The Parks Department has asked me to check if any part-time library staff would like a few extra hours helping with senior programming at Crown Point. They’re looking for help Thursday and Friday from 3pm-5pm and possibly some weekend hours. Let me know if you’re interested.
Adult Summer Reading
FINAL 2022 Adult Summer Reading_Instructions
The adult summer reading program will run similarly to past years. We try to make it as simple and accessible as possible. Click on the link above for the detailed instructions.
In short, adults can pick up a brochure (and additional prize entry tickets) at the Ref Desk or download from the library website. They can read or listen to books, complete a puzzle or attend an adult program. Adults should turn in one prize entry ticket for each activity completed – there is a paint bucket to collect tickets at the Ref Desk.
Weekly prizes (gift cards) will be awarded and at the end of the summer, grand prizes will be awarded.
If you have questions, ask Beth or Peg.
