Guidelines for Check-in to Improve Accuracy
So, as you probably have noticed from the calls you have received, there seems to have been a sudden increase in items being shelved without being checked in since late June.
We were doing really, really well while we were double scanning our items so I am going to request that we go back to double scanning everything at check-in.
My next request is that you separate the process of checking in from examining for damage or wiping down.
- So please just go through your cart and slowly scan each item before you wipe it, fan it out, or examine it for damage. No cloth in hand – nothing. The first step in the process should be checking in the item – and just that. Please put your entire focus on getting that item in and off the patron’s account.
- Special instructions for holds:
- If an item traps a hold, quickly scan it for damage, fan it and look for missing parts before hitting continue to trap the hold. Once you have a hold slip printed, you know it was checked in.
- If you notice major damage or missing pieces during this check, click No in the holds notification window. Then hit Yes when prompted to reactivate the hold. Then place the item to a circ status of In-Repair or use Special Item Check-in to get the item where it needs to go. Make sure you put a circ expedite slip with the item and the proper orange form. After the part is returned or after the item is repaired, the hold will be trapped when the item is scanned through the check-in screen.
- Special instructions for holds:
- Next – go through your cart and fan each item, wipe it down if necessary, and examine it for missing parts or damage. Scan once more for good measure and continue to preshelve the items.
I hope these two steps will help. It will slow us down with check-in, and that is ok. I would rather be accurate than fast,
Please let me know if you have questions.
August Schedule
I’m publishing the first two weeks of August on When to Work today. Saturday the rest of August will be published.
LSI Brochures/Services
Myself, Megan, Beth, and Peg have recently met with a handful of metro-area social service organizations to get a better understanding of what they offer and to make us better able to refer patrons to places that offer services they might need. Of those we’ve met, Lutheran Services of Iowa (LSI) seems to offer the most comprehensive and accessible services. I’ve placed some brochures that detail some of those services in the display by the inside book drop. Scans of each are accessible via the link below. See more of their services on their website. We plan to continue these meetings and will discuss how what we’ve learned can be shared with PS/YS staff.
Picture Book Shelving
Picture book shifting will begin on Sunday morning. During this time all picture books will be pulled from the shelves, organized by category, and then re-shelved alphabetically by author within each category.
Depending on how long the process takes, some picture books will be unavailable.
Molly and other circulation staff have worked on picture book pre-shelving and the changes will be made at the end of this week.
An update with the shifting and order of the categories will come out on Sunday or Monday.
Thanks!
Meeting Room Doors
Reminder:
Meeting room doors should be locked following programs and meetings. These doors should also be checked at close to make sure they are locked.
Thank you!
Outdoor Wifi
A crew will arrive tomorrow to begin routing cable for installation of equipment to extend the library’s wifi into the spaces to the north, west, and south of the library (see the diagram below). The project, which is being funded via a grant from Prairie Meadows, should be completed by August.

Card Kits Available for Pick-Up at the Reference Desk
Starting with the August card kits, we will be directing patrons to the Reference Desk for pick-up. The thinness of the card kit envelopes is causing the kits to get lost among the thicker books and media on the holds shelves. Patrons are already used to picking up craft kits at the Reference Desk, so this practice will be more consistent for adult craft kits.
I’ve already e-mailed the change to our card craft club mailing list, so there may be some confusion as to where to pick up the July card kits. They are on the holds shelves.
Kits are available for pick-up from noon the day after Sunday Card Crafting Club, and they will remain available for one week. After that, the kits are offered to people on the waiting list.
If you have questions, please see me or Lori French.

All-Staff Meeting Slides
Links to today’s slides are included below as well as a link to the complete list of “Library Law FAQs”.
Genre Headings for Picture Books
At this morning’s staff meeting, I talked about genre headings for picture books. Genre headings describe the form of the item as opposed to subject headings which describe the content.
See this handout for an example of how you can click on a genre heading and then limit the results to picture books. The handout also includes a list of genre headings commonly used for picture books.
Concrete Grinding Friday
Public Works staff will be here Friday morning to grind some concrete in the large meeting room where the wall is currently dragging along the ground. Expect an hour or so of annoying noise.
Overdrive/Bridges News

Yankee Doodle Pops update
The Yankee Doodle Pops will not only broadcast live on Iowa PBS on Friday the 1st at 8:30 PM, but also on Saturday at 3:30 AM, and on Sunday at 1 PM. Will also broadcast live on Iowa Public Radio Classical, but don’t know about re-runs on that network. Again, it’s free, so feel free to bring family and friends, blankets, food, and lawn chairs. https://dmsymphony.org/concerts-events/yankee-doodle-pops/
West Patio Update
The shade installers are currently creating footings for the shade structure. Once the footings are in and have cured, they’ll install the structures legs. Once that’s done, the concrete company will come back to pour the patio. It may be up to two weeks before the patio is reopened.
All-Staff Meeting Thursday
Our bi-monthly all-staff meeting will be held this Thursday at 8:00am in the Large Meeting Room.
