Michel Pogge-Weaver Appointed Johnston City Administrator

Johnston, Iowa – The City of Johnston is pleased to announce Michel Pogge-Weaver will join the team as the new City Administrator.

Michel Pogge-Weaver has served as the City Manager in Carroll, IA, since 2016. Prior to this position, he served as the County Administrator for Swift County, MN, from 2013 to 2016. Prior to Swift County, Pogge-Weaver served as the City Planner for the City of Stillwater, MN and Ankeny, IA. Michel is a member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the State IaCMA, where he currently sits on the State IaCMA Executive Board and serves as the State IaCMA President-Elect.

“We are excited to welcome Michel Pogge-Weaver as Johnston’s new City Administrator,” said Mayor Paula Dierenfeld. “His 22 years of experience in local government management and community development makes him particularly well suited to step into the position and keep our community moving in the right direction. He will be joining a team of very qualified and competent department heads and city staff. We are confident he will provide the guidance and support needed to carry forward several significant projects, including developing the Johnston Gateway, Johnston Town Center and the Northwest Annexation Area.”

“I am honored and thrilled the Council has entrusted me with the responsibility of being Johnston’s next administrator,” said Michel Pogge-Weaver. “I look forward to becoming an active member of the Johnston community and working with the Mayor, City Council, and the talented and committed staff of Johnston as we collectively work to build upon the incredible success Johnston has achieved.”

Michel holds a Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Planning and Political Science from Iowa State University, and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Hamline University.

The city utilized SGR to assist in conducting the extensive search that resulted in an impressive candidate pool. They received 29 applications from candidates in 11 states.

No Scooters and Bikes behind Desks

We have had an uptick of kids that want to leave their scooters or bikes behind the Circulation Desk. For the safety of staff (tripping hazard) and to discourage kids from riding them in and out of the library, we are asking that library users keep bikes and scooters outside of the library.

Since we have allowed some users to keep bikes and scooter behind the desk recently, you may get some questions or pushback. Please always remind people that we offer scooter and bike locks. If the bike or scooter owner does not feel comfortable locking their bike or scooter outside, please let them know that we cannot, for safety reasons, keep them in the library. You can use your judgment, but for younger library users, you may want to gently let them know that if they do not feel comfortable locking it up outside, they may need to return it to their home, and they may not want to ride it to the library anymore.

We are able to keep balls behind the Circulation Desk on or below the white cart.

Please let Molly or Beth know if you have any questions.

New Tech Lab Switch

The new Tech Lab switch has been installed. The replacement’s interface is nearly identical to the old one but it only has four inputs–four fewer inputs than we had before–so one piece of equipment had to go. I’ve removed the record player which has only been used a handful of times since the Tech Lab opened in 2015.

Office and Janitorial Supplies

We’ve been working on organizing supplies. Office and processing supplies will continue to be stored in the TS area, and the cabinets are labeled. Please ask anyone in TS if you need assistance finding something.

Janitorial supplies are stored in the maintenance room behind the Whisper Room.

Copier paper is stored at each copier. Surplus reams and rolls of receipt paper are stored in the staff kitchen.

You can find a list of core supplies at P:Office SuppliesCore Office Supplies.xlsx. This list is a work in progress. Suggestions are welcome.

Use the #Office-Supplies-Needed channel on Slack to report when you take the next to the last of something. The person who places the order will reply to the channel.

All supervisors will continue to order supplies for programs, special projects, etc. If you need supplies that aren’t on the core list, check with your supervisor.

AP Flashcards – Now Available to Circulate as Learning Tools

There will be six sets of flashcards over AP subject tests available to check out as learning tools. These flashcard sets have 500 cards, but we have decided that we will NOT count for missing cards. Patrons will get as many cards as were left by the previous borrower.

There is a check-in and check-out note, similar to the note that pops up about SD card reformatting, that will remind you that you do not need to verify that all 500 cards are in the set.

Please let me know if you have any questions about circulating these flashcard sets.
