JPL wear
I received a postcard for JPL wear from a company we have purchased from in the past. This time they are offering a green, zip-up, hooded sweatshirt that says. “Reading…makes life better” on the left side of the zipper and we can have “Johnston Public Library” personalized onto the right side of the zipper. It is $18.95 plus tax and shipping…unless we get 12+ orders than shipping is free! Take a look and see if you are interested in one.
Please see the flyer and sign-up sheet on the break room table. You need to sign up by Wednesday, September 9th, please!
Thank you,
Missy

New Patron Code: Probationary Status
The Board has approved a new patron code: Probationary Status.
Probationary Status will be used by supervisors for patrons who owe more than $10.00 and seek relief from their financial obligation. The supervisor may stipulate a change to Probationary Status as part of the agreement to waive all or a portion of the amount owed.
Probationary status protects a patron from accruing large fines by limiting the number of items he may check out. In general, the patron may check out 3 books, 3 music CDs, 3 DVDs, 1 videogame, and so forth. However, there is an overall limit of 10 items. Therefore, the patron could check out the 10 items I listed, but if he tried to check out 1 magazine, that would be an 11th item, and Polaris would warn you that he was over his limit. So there is both a material type limit and an overall limit in force.
A patron remains in probationary status for a minimum of six months. The date his probation ends is listed in the patron status record as a non-blocking note. The patron may request removal from probationary status once his six months have expired. In order to be removed, he cannot owe more than $10, and he cannot have any overdue items. If the patron doesn’t ask to be removed from probationary status, he can remain with that status indefinitely.
No other library privileges are affected by probationary status. He may still borrow electronic materials, use the computers, place holds, renew online, use self-check, and so forth. Self-check will enforce the material type and overall total limits.
If you have any questions about probationary status, please let me know.

Board Books Now Organized by Author
Kinney and Sheila have assigned letters to each of the Board Book bins and board books are now organized by the first letter of the author’s last name (or title — whatever is on the spine label). No attempt will be made to sort more finely than that.
When you’re putting board books away, please be sure to place them in the appropriate bin.
Much thanks to Kinney and Sheila!

New Shelvers Start Today
Two library shelvers will start work today. They are Kayla Davis (student) and Laura Daly (adult). Kayla is a familiar face as she has been volunteering this summer. You may also recognize Laura as she is a faithful library user.
Both Kayla and Laura will work three days a week. Kayla will work Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Laura will work Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
I will bring them around to meet you during their orientation, but if we miss you and you see them out shelving, please introduce yourselves.

Open Records Requests
Currently, there is a man going to various departments in metro cities videotaping interactions with city workers as he make an open records request. If this man requests records of the library please refer him to Maurine or myself. If neither of us are in the building, please call me at 250-5381.

Costume Swap
We’ve begun promoting our first Halloween costume swap. Costumes can be donated throughout the month of September. Donors will receive a coupon to exchange for a new costume on the “donors-only” swap-day on October 4th. Anyone can choose a costume on the other swap-days -October 5th & 6th. We’ll discuss the event in more detail at the August staff meeting.
Power out tomorrow morning
Electricians will complete their work on the UPS removal project (ask me or Maurine if you’re intersted in what this is) tomorrow morning at 7am and will be cutting power to parts of the building for about 30 minutes. If you have your own work PC (and get this message before Friday morning), please be sure it’s shut down by close on Thursday. Dreama will ensure public and circ. PCs are turned off.
Pre-Shelving YA Cart
YA materials (YA Fiction, YA Paperbacks, Graphic Novels, and YA CD Books) are now pre-shelved by check-in staff to a white cart.
This change made room on the checked-in shelves for Juvenile Paperbacks, Juvenile CD Books, Juvenile Graphic Novels, and Magazines to be moved up one shelf.

Receipt Printer for Internet Guest Passes at YS Desk
Lori F. and I installed a receipt printer at the YS Desk today. This printer is connected to the PC Reservation console so that staff may print Internet guest passes. Continue to log guests into the Games PCs using Games1/6700 or Games2/6700.
In order to get the receipt printer to work properly, I had to change the settings in PC Reservation to print a barcode as well as the login number/PIN. On the YS receipt printer, you will see a barcode, the login number, and the PIN. On the Ref Desk receipt printer, you will see the login number inside two asterisks in a large font, the login number a second time in a smaller font, and the PIN.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

New Meeting Room Reservation Form
We recently purchased a different module for booking meeting rooms.
I’ve changed up the options under “Meeting Room” on the main website page as the availability and booking are now one in the same.
I would encourage all of you to take a quick peak at it and even send me a fake reservation to try it out so you can all answer questions about it.
PLEASE make sure I know it is a fake reservation.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks all!

Internet Station 8 Replaced
I installed a new PC to replace Station 8. The new PC uses Windows 7.
This new PC is like the two I installed in Youth Services last week — smaller in size than our traditional towers. I set it up horizontally (the way the DVD drive opens) and placed the PC under the monitor.

Scratch Paper at Circ Desk
In an effort to tidy the Circ Desk area, I have moved the cut pieces of scratch paper from various boxes and stored them in the card catalog drawers. I will label the drawers soon.

Extra Items in Circ Check-In Area
Under the When to Work schedule in the Check-In area, we have been accumulating a supply of “spare parts.” You’re welcome to look through the stack and take anything that you can use in your area.
What’s left at the end of August will be heading off to trash or recycling.
