National Voter Registration Day

September 22, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ 6700 Merle Hay Road

National Voter Registration Day is September 22nd. Members of the League of Women Voters will be at the Johnston Public Library to register first time voters and help voters who are already registered update their information. Patrons need to be prepared to provide either the last 4 digits of their social security number or their driver’s license number. A photo ID is not required.

We received word that Kinney’s mother passed away over the weekend.

A bouquet and sympathy card will be sent from the library staff.  

An envelope is on the black file cabinet outside my office if you would like to make a donation toward the flowers.   

Tonight we had an incident where a patron accidentally pulled the fire alarm in the East Meeting Room.  The patron had the room reserved for Senior College and arrived to set up.  The room was unlocked (my fault I think because I didn’t lock it after the group before finished) and she entered the dark room.  She was fumbling for the light switch and pulled the fire alarm in error.

Staff followed library procedures to remove patrons from the building in a calm and efficient manner.

What we learned tonight is this:  once a fire alarm is pulled ONLY the Johnston Fire Department can disarm it.

The Board approved revisions to our Interlibrary loan (ILL) policy.  As a result, we will now borrow and lend music CDs and movies on DVD and Blu-ray.  JPL patrons may request up to 5 items via ILL at a time.

If a patron is interested in obtaining an item from another library, fill out the ILL request form (available via the PAC or the Intranet under Helping Patrons).  There is a $3.00 fee per request to help pay for postage.  It may take up to 4 weeks for us to receive the item.

Consumer Reports.org is now live. Patrons can log in with their library card number via the link on the library’s website (go to Online Resources then Informational Databases)

Art In the Barn and Craft In the Barn are fundraisers for the Friends of the Johnston Public Library. 

Artists/Crafters can register for these events online on their respective webpages (linked below).

Craft In the Barn will be held in the library’s large meeting room this year; Art In the Barn will be held at the Simpson Barn west of the library.

Collection of donated costumes for the library’s second annual costume swap begins tomorrow (Tuesday).

Donors can drop their costumes in one of the pumpkins in front of the Archive room and pick up a coupon (shown below) at the checkout desk.

Staff should complete the coupon with the number of costumes donated.  

Donors can trade their coupon for costumes at the “donors-only” swap day, Saturday, October 3rd. Anyone can choose costumes October 4th and 5th.

Most of our new conference tables have arrived. Over the next few weeks, several libaries will be picking up our old tables. I’m not sure they’ll give us advance notice. The old conference tables are in the meeting room clost. 

An electrical conduit that runs down the west side of the building will be relocated by Stroh Friday morning. This should not impact other electrical systems but it may be noisy.

On September 1, we will begin offering patrons remote access to ConsumerReports.org. This Ebsco service makes available all reviews and articles from Consumer Reports in a format that’s more intuitive to navigate than Consumer Reports information available via our current Ebsco offerings. For those interested, a trial is linked below.

A Circulation Assistant Librarian position has been posted on the bulletin board in the break room. This is a part time position.

When you withdraw materials from the collection, please place them on the cart labeled “Withdrawn.”  The cart is located in Technical Services to the west of my desk.  We’ll be using the shelves in Missy’s area to store Book Club sets.

If you are conducting a weeding project and have a cart full of withdrawn materials, put a note on the cart and leave it in Technical Services.
