Holds and early closing
Because of yesterday’s early library closing due to weather, customers will have one extra day to come pick up available holds. Holds that would have been pulled from the hold shelf today Feb. 21 will not be removed until tomorrow.
March Book Displays
FYI – my March book table topics will be Science – NF 500 & SF books.
The second table will be on Aging.

Community Survey
I’ve included the parts of the commmunity survey results related to the library below as well as a link to the full results. You should all be very proud of the work you do and how the community perceives it.
- Library Services. Residents were generally satisfied with the overall quality of libraryservices provided. Eighty‐seven percent (87%) of the residents surveyed, who had an opinion, were “very satisfied” and “satisfied” with the Johnston Public Library; 84% weresatisfied with the quality of library materials, books, DVDs magazines and etc. and 84%were satisfied with the quality of library programs, story hours and book discussions.
- Seventy‐two percent (72%) of residents reported they had visited a JohnstonPublic Library in the past year.
Comments…
- Larger library collection. Without integration with Urbandale, many earlier works of popular authorsare not in the collection.
- Stop planning for schools, and library too large and expensive for the population of less than 20,000.
- Excellent schools. Wonderful library, good police presence around schools
Summer Reading T-shirts
If you would like to purchase a summer reading themed t-shirt or two or three, please take a look at your options on the break room table. There are six different ones, two from each of the groups: children, teen, and adult. You can see a teeny tiny picture of each t-shirt, the sizes and pricing for particular sizes. One the sheet stapled, please sign your name, desired size, and price of that size. Payment is not due until the t-shirts arrive.
I will order next Wednesday, February 26th, so you need to sign up on the sheets by 2/25!
Thank you!
Missy
Timesheets due
Please remember to turn in your timesheet today, Wednesday, February 19! If you receive it, don’t forget to write in your holiday time for Monday 2/17.

Resume using color dots to designate ‘New’ children’s items in the Youth Services area
Because Polaris does not currently display the New Shelf Location when items are scanned for in-house use, we are going to resume using color dots to designate ‘New’ children’s items for the Youth Services area. Please shelve any Juvenile items with a red dot on their designated ‘New’ shelves and do not remove any color dots from Juvenile materials. Youth Services staff will be responsible for removing items and dots from the YS New shelves.
We will continue to rely on the New Shelf Location for Adult and YA materials. If you question whether an adult or YA book should be returned to the ‘New arrivals’ section, just scan the barcode as a regular check-in and verify the shelf location. Checking in an item multiple times creates no problem.
Please see Maurine or Jo with questions.
Lions Club Book Sale Volunteer Sign-up
A sign-up sheet for volunteering at the Lions Club book sale can be found on the break room table.

Yearbooks
Next week, we are shipping our yearbooks to be digitized. I’ve put out a call on Facebook for residents to lend us those we don’t have. If someone drops off a yearbook, be sure to get their name and contact information so it can be returned.

Changes in the workroom
The workroom is a moving! Sheryl Start has moved to Rita’s former desk forming a Technical Services pod with Jo and Maurine. Dreama will begin using Sheryl’s former desk allowing her to be closer to the circulation activity.
We will also be getting two additional Polaris receipt printers for the workroom which will allow some more flexibility for holds and check-in activities.
Timesheets due!
Hello Everyone,
Please turn in your timesheet today, Wednesday 2/5!
Thank you!

New Library Board Member
Mike Israel was appointed to the Library Board at last night’s council meeting. Mike will complete David Beecher’s term on the board. Mike and his wife and small children are frequent library users. He describes himself as an “avid reader” and as “interested in serving my community and sharing the benefits of JPL”. He will attend his first meeting on the 20th.
Funeral services for Janet Stanton’s daughter
We received word that Janet Stanton’s daughter passed away Sunday evening. Services will be tomorrow in Tennessee — here’s a link with an obituary and service details: http://www.morrisbaker.com/book-of-memories/1791757/Stanton-Vannessa/service-details.php
A bouquet and sympathy card have been sent from the library staff. An envelope is in the upper right hand drawer of Karla’s desk if you would like to make a donation toward the purchase of the flowers.
More info on the no-new dots for adult items
If you discharge an adult item (ficiton, LP, NF, Bio, Cd book) that has a new dot, please remove it. This afternoon we will be removing the dots from the current items on the ‘New Arrivals’ shelves.
Therefore, there will not be dots on the new adults items from this day forward.
Thank You for your assistance in getting dots off!!
Items Set to “On Display”
When items that are set to “On Display” are checked out, they will be removed automatically from “On Display”. In other words, staff are not required to take additional steps to remove items from being “On Display”.
New New-Item Process
From this point forward, Tech Services will no longer be placing colored stickers on the spines of materials to be shelved on the various “New” shelves -e.g. new fiction, new nonfiction, new audiobooks, etc. In time, the only indication that an item is “New” will be the “New” designation in the Shelf Location column (see image). A black basket has been placed above the holds basket at check-in to separate these items as they’re checked-in. Each night, new items that are both older than four months and are checked out will be de-newed. Please let Maurine or I know if you have questions.
