Beth Womacks Is Retiring in October
Beth W. informed Eric today that the first week of October will be her last week working for the Johnston Public Library. It’s too soon to start missing her yet, but we’ll be making plans in the weeks ahead to celebrate her 22 years with the Library.
Book Sale Coupon
The Foundation & Friends have generously agreed to allow us to give a Book Sale coupon to a Library visitor who doesn’t qualify for a library card. Many of us have encountered situations where there is a person who wants to read a book but who can’t obtain a library card. Now you can give this person a coupon so that s/he can choose one item from the Book Sale area for free.
Beth Stevens created the coupon which is available for printing from the Printables area of the Intranet. I have printed out a number of them which will be available at the Circulation Desk. You’re welcome to give them out from the YS and Ref desks, too.
When the person redeems his coupon, he should turn the coupon in at the Circ Desk. The Circ staff member will write on the coupon the value of the item he selected (e.g., $2 for hardback, $1 for trade, or $1 for a DVD, etc.) and place the coupon in the Foundation bag. Maurine will collect the coupons each day and include them with the Foundation donations so that Eric can report on the program to the Foundation & Friends.
If you have any questions about the coupons, please let me know.

Discontinue Use of Address Check for Patrons
We are no longer going to check patron addresses once a year. Patron registration will continue to expire every 2 years.
When we create a new registration for a patron, the address check will be set for 99 years. I have changed all existing patrons to require an address check on 7/1/2113.

Congratulations!
33,308 items were checked out and 25,939 items were checked in during the month of June (an average of 1,190 items checked out and 926 items checked in every day). This surpasses the previous record that was set back in June 2011. Give yourselves and your co-workers a pat on the back, you deserve it!

Artists can register and pay their registration fee online. When tickets go on sale, attendees will be able to purchase tickets via the site as well.

Due to the Friday holiday, paychecks will be deposited on Thursday this week.

7 surprises about libraries in our surveys
The Pew Research Center’s studies about libraries and where they fit in the lives of their communities and patrons have uncovered some surprising facts about what Americans think of libraries and the way they use them.
Fiction Bookclub sets with authors M-Z
All Fiction Bookclub books that have an author M – Z are currently located below the adult paperbacks. This is VERY temporary shelving as I shift the Fiction collection.
Are you wondering about the future location of all Fiction Bookclub sets? I thought so…. 🙂
All sets will live on the bottom shelf in the same section the author is located.
YA Paperbacks
YA paperbacks have been moved across the aisle to the shelves following YA hardcovers.
Teen & Programming Space
At yesterday’s staff meeting I introduced an exciting project that will be completed this fall. As you know, the library currently lacks a space to conduct hands-on, technology-related programs for small groups. The library’s teen users are similarly without a dedicated space for doing homework, working with technology, and hanging-out with peers. The Johnston Public Library Foundation has committed funds for construction of a glass-walled space dedicated to teens and technology programming in the northeast corner of the Youth Services area. This space will provide a home not only for the library’s teens but also for programs like our Scratch Club, where kids learn computer programming concepts using drag-and-drop tools; our Take-Apart Tuesdays, where kids take apart electronics to discover how they’re put together and how they work; and a variety of computer classes for teens, children, and seniors and other adults. The space will contain new tables and lounge furniture, whiteboards, and a ceiling-mounted TV for presentations. A video is embedded below (but may not be viewable via an email message). Please let me know if you have questions.
Flooding
The most recent information on flooding in our city has been posted on the city’s website, and on our Facebook and Twitter pages. We will update as needed throughout the rain/flooding events. Please direct residents and business owners to these sources of information.

Patio Canopy
Last night’s wind bent the patio structure and caused a small tear in the canopy. The Parks Department has removed the canopy and will looking into more structurally sound alternatives.
Pre-Shelving CD Bins Re-Labeled
I added labels for the new music CD genres to the pre-shelving bins in the Check-in Area. Until Tech Services has re-labeled all of the CDs, we will need to have bins for both old and new genre names. The bins are sitting alphabetically on the shelves according to their new genre labels.
