Conference Room 1

Conference Room 1 is reservable up to 30 days in advance.  The reservations for Conference Room 1 appear on Event Keeper as “Study Room Reservation.”  There will be no group name or individual name appearing on the calendar to protect the privacy of the person reserving.  This room is not an official meeting room so our usage guidelines are different.  Please see the policy manual if you have questions re:this.

From now on, there will be a weekly calendar in Conference Room 1 to display the room reservations.  This calendar is a duplicate of the weekly calendar that is at the front desk and at the Ref Desk.

Please let Cheryl know if you have any questions.

We are now accepting costumes for the Halloween Costume Swap. Donations should be bagged (give them a grocery bag if they don’t have one) and placed in the cardboard box by the archive room. Donor coupons (pictured below) are located at the checkout desk. Write the number of costumes donated in the space provided. The coupons allow donors to choose costumes on the first day of the swap -Saturday, October 4th.

Jeanne Hansen

Jeanne Hansen, staunch library supporter, passed away Monday.  Jeanne was on the initial advisory committee that founded the Johnston Public Library.  She continued as a member of the Board of Trustees, actively assisting with the bond issue and Capital Campaign that led to our present facility.  She then continued on as a Library Friend and volunteer until just a few weeks ago when her failing health forced her “retirement”.   Arrangements are pending.

Lost and Found Reminder

Friendly Reminder:

When one finds a “lost” item, please attach a small note with the date found and your initials before placing it in the Lost & Found box.  If you find multiple items, one note is sufficient, but please secure them with a rubberband.

We are now holding items for just 14 days.  Knowing the date the item was found helps me determine the date to remove it from the box.  Your initials allow me to follow-up with you if necessary.

Thank you!

Travel brochures & materials

In the next few weeks, we will be receiving a large amount of travel brochures from various areas throughout the United States.  These are materials that I am expecting and DO want.  Please DO NOT DISCARD these as the items will look just like junk mail.  When they arrive, please just place them on the desk in the 2nd office.

If you have a question about if I truly want something or not, please just err on the side of caution, keep it, and place it in the 2nd office for me to look at.

Thank you,

Cheryl

Art in the Barn Activities

You may receive questions about three different activities associated with Art in the Barn:

  1. A person may want to purchase a ticket to attend Art in the Barn on September 19 from 5:30 to 8:30.  Registration is $20 per person. He may purchase his ticket online or at the Circ Desk.  At the Circ Desk, we will accept cash, check or credit card.  The tickets are in a notebook under the Foundation drawer.  Each ticket is numbered.  Write the buyer’s name in the notebook for each ticket he purchases.  People who register online do not receive physical tickets.  Their names will be on a list at the  event.
  2. An artist may want to register to exhibit his art.  He may pay his registration fee online or at the Circ Desk.  At the Circ Desk, we will accept cash, check or credit card.  Registration forms are located under the Foundation drawer next to the tickets and notebook.  Place the registration form on Eric’s desk.
  3. A person may want to attend the Social Painting Party on September 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Registration for this event is $40 and includes admission to Art in the Barn.  Registration is through Connie Pruitt, the event coordinator and must be completed online.

Computer Off-Line

If you are having difficulty with a computer being off-line (especially computers 11 & 12 in the study rooms), please check to see if the Ethernet cable is plugged into the computer. Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed cables have been unplugged from the computer. My guess would be that a patron who uses the study room was having trouble with the WiFi and used it to plug into their own laptop. So, if you are having difficulty getting a computer to connect or it is continually saying that it is off-line, check to make sure that its plugged in!

3 Female Youths

Maida Jusufovic, and Haley Chandler are both banned from the library and library property for 14 days.  Saturday staff (Jessica, Micah, Sheryl, and Missy) were all introduced to Maida in case you need identification help.

Schyann Steele is not banned, however she will be working with me this next week – Monday through Thursday.  She is only to be in the building while she is working with me.  If she is not with me, she needs to leave.

These three young ladies were caught throwing water and toliet paper against the ceiling, walls, and floors in the women’s restroom Friday evening.  I spoke with all three girls and parents Saturday afternoon.  Schyann’s mother wanted her to clean the library rather than be banned.

If you have question, please feel free to ask myself or Eric.  I’m here Monday through Thursday this upcoming week.

JPL wear

I received a postcard for JPL wear from a company we have purchased from in the past.  This time they are offering a green, zip-up, hooded sweatshirt that says. “Reading…makes life better” on the left side of the zipper and we can have “Johnston Public Library” personalized onto the right side of the zipper.  It is $18.95 plus tax and shipping…unless we get 12+ orders than shipping is free!  Take a look and see if you are interested in one.

Please see the flyer and sign-up sheet on the break room table.  You need to sign up by Wednesday, September 9th, please!

Thank you,

Missy

New Patron Code: Probationary Status

The Board has approved a new patron code: Probationary Status.

Probationary Status will be used by supervisors for patrons who owe more than $10.00 and seek relief from their financial obligation.  The supervisor may stipulate a change to Probationary Status as part of the agreement to waive all or a portion of the amount owed.

Probationary status protects a patron from accruing large fines by limiting the number of items he may check out.  In general, the patron may check out 3 books, 3 music CDs, 3 DVDs, 1 videogame, and so forth.  However, there is an overall limit of 10 items.  Therefore, the patron could check out the 10 items I listed, but if he tried to check out 1 magazine, that would be an 11th item, and Polaris would warn you that he was over his limit.  So there is both a material type limit and an overall limit in force.

A patron remains in probationary status for a minimum of six months.  The date his probation ends is listed in the patron status record as a non-blocking note.  The patron may request removal from probationary status once his six months have expired.  In order to be removed, he cannot owe more than $10, and he cannot have any overdue items.  If the patron doesn’t ask to be removed from probationary status, he can remain with that status indefinitely.

No other library privileges are affected by probationary status.  He may still borrow electronic materials, use the computers, place holds, renew online, use self-check, and so forth.  Self-check will enforce the material type and overall total limits.

If you have any questions about probationary status, please let me know.

Board Books Now Organized by Author

Kinney and Sheila have assigned letters to each of the Board Book bins and board books are now organized by the first letter of the author’s last name (or title — whatever is on the spine label).  No attempt will be made to sort more finely than that.

When you’re putting board books away, please be sure to place them in the appropriate bin.

Much thanks to Kinney and Sheila!

New Shelvers Start Today

Two library shelvers will start work today.  They are Kayla Davis (student) and Laura Daly (adult).  Kayla is a familiar face as she has been volunteering this summer.  You may also recognize Laura as she is a faithful library user.

Both Kayla and Laura will work three days a week.  Kayla will work Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.  Laura will work Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

I will bring them around to meet you during their orientation, but if we miss you and you see them out shelving, please introduce yourselves.

Open Records Requests

Currently, there is a man going to various departments in metro cities videotaping interactions with city workers as he make an open records request. If this man requests records of the library please refer him to Maurine or myself. If neither of us are in the building, please call me at 250-5381.
