Circulation Updates
11/18/14
A couple of updates this morning.
Per Dreama — Circulation will continue to print internet passes at opening, but we will print 5 instead of 10 passes.
Also meeting room guests requested dry erase markers from me this morning, and I gave them the markers behind the cirulation window.
Cheryl informed me that dry erase packs are at the reference desk for guests. The packs can be found in the third drawer down on the right.

Hello all!
I have had 13 responses to the surverys that I gave all of you. I would really like to get 100% participation! Please make sure to fill out the survey and put it in the basket by the mail boxes. I will not be using names in the display so you will have complete anonymity
Thanks!

YS Computers
After much discussion, it was decided that kids using the YS Computer stations will be required to use their library/computer cards to log in. If they have forgotten their card, YS staff will look up their patron number and log them in. Making the switch to one day only guest passes has cut down on the problems we were seeing before. If no one is present in Youth Services, circ staff or ref staff will look up the card no. to log them in.
Circ will issue a guest pass only when there is no one at the Ref or YS desk to do so. Computer only cards can be made for frequent library users who want to use computers. Guest passes will only be given to someone who is not a regular library user or lives out of the area.
Kids were also told that there will be a Zero Tolerance policy in effect. This means 1) no bullying 2) no inappropriate language 3) controlled noise level.
Please check with Dreama, Eric, Maurine, Kinney, or Lynne if questions.
Staff Meeting Reminder
Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, our staff meeting will be held next Thursday at 8am.
Project Share Star Cards now Available
Johnston Community Education has delivered Project Share Star Cards to the library. Project Share has been implementing a holiday giving program for 21 years.
I have placed the cards in the Foundation Supplies drawer.
Cards for BOYS are in an ORANGE file folder.
Cards for GIRLS are in a YELLOW file folder.
RECEIPTS for cards taken should be placed in the GREEN file folder.
When a patron requests a card or cards, please offer them the folders. Once the cards are selected, ask the patron to fill out the bottom of the blue sheet and return it to you. Cut off the bottom of the blue sheet, place it in the RECEIPTS folder; hand the rest of the blue sheet to the patron to take with him or her.
If you or a patron has questions, please refer them to Johnston Community Education 278-0552.
Two dates offered for Welcome to Medicare Adult Program
The Welcome to Medicare program, facilitated by SHIP counselors will be offered at JPL on November 15 and Saturday, December 13 at 10:30 am. SHIP, a free, confidential service of the State of Iowa, helps Iowans make informed decisions about Medicare and other health coverage. SHIP counselors will be on hand to answer Medicare queries ranging from Medicare Parts A and B coverage, benefits, eligibility requirements, and health care costs. RSVPs are requested and taken at the Reference Desk.

Checking the status of Purchase Requests from PAC & Internet
Patrons can now check the current status of a their purchase requests via the “My Account” screen of the PAC. Staff can do the same for patrons via the intranet by clicking “Purchase / ILL Request” under “Helping Patrons”, finding the patron and clicking their name, then clicking “View Requests”.
Change to Public Printing
Users can now tap on two or more jobs on the Print Release Station to select them and print them all at once. When you select the jobs, you will see a display at the top of the screen showing the total number of pages to be printed and the total cost.
If a patron accidentally taps a job he doesn’t want to print, he can tap it again to de-select it.

YS7 PC Replaced
I installed a new PC to replace YS 7. This new PC takes up less space and is similar to YS1 and YS2. It uses the Windows 7 operating system. All 7 of the PCs in Youth Services are now Windows 7 PCs.

Ancestry & Heritage Quest
As of today, we are live with Ancestry and Heritage Quest. Both are research tools for exploring one’s ancestry. Heritage Quest can accessed remotely; Ancestry is limited to use within the library. We will begin promotion of these tools soon and will spend some time at the November staff meeting demonstrating their features. In the meantime feel free to explore via the links below.

Holds and New Crates in Circulation
We’ve removed the Holds and New crates from the Circulation check-in desk. Please place all materials you want Circulation to check-in or shelve on a red cart. You’ll find the red carts near the inside book drop or in the check-in area. Even if the items are already checked-in, we will check them in again and determine where they are to be shelved.
If you print a hold slip for an item, place the item on the top shelf of the black cart at the Circ Desk.
Thank you.

Volunteer Job Descriptions
New procedure for volunteering
There are now 11 different volunteer jobs that people can apply for. These are kept with the volunteer application, the other job applications and job descriptions at the Circ Desk. They also live on the website and on the Intranet under “Helping Patrons” on the left side of the screen.
When people come in to ask about volunteering, please show them the job descriptions and have them write on the application which job they would like to apply for ALONG WITH THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS. Let them know staff will be contacting them to let them know the status of their application.
The job descriptions should remain “in-house.” If the patron wants to take the descriptions home, please politely tell them no and that they may view the decriptions online.
Please let Cheryl know if you have questions.
Donate to Winter Warmth Drive
Kate Irwin, one of our shelvers, has invited the JPL staff to participate in Johnston High School’s Winter Warmth Drive now through November 5.
“The Winter Warmth Drive is a collaboration between students in schools around the Des Moines region that collects an assortment of gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves, blankets, snow boots and snow pants for those who are unable to purchase these items for themselves.
The drives are run by students, (clubs, student or character councils) within each participating school. By having the drives almost 100% student run, it allows the students the opportunity to not only be part of a large community service project, but to be able to enhance their team building, marketing, advertising, public speaking and project management skills.
The items collected are then provided to a handful of non-profit agencies that work with those in need of winter items, such as Freedom for Youth, Hawthorn Hill and Ruth Harbor. However, the main benefactors of the items collected are other students in schools around the Des Moines region whose demographics are mostly made up of children who qualify for free or reduced lunch.”
If you and your family/friends would like to contribute items, please place items in the tub in the Staff Lounge.
