Adult Reading Logs
Our nifty lockbox, to collect summer reading logs, has fallen off the exterior wall. In the interest of time, we placed a label on the book drop slots for patrons to drop their logs there. Please place logs in Peg’s mailbox.
Thanks,
Peg
Free Leaf Lettuce
Hey – my garden produced too much lettuce for us to eat so I’m sharing. There are three LARGE bags of leaf lettuce in the staff refrigerator – please take as much as you can use. Note: I did NOT wash the lettuce prior to putting it in the bag so be sure to wash it thoroughly before using. And I need a favor. I won’t be back to JPL until Monday, July 13, so could someone throw away any unused lettuce when/if it goes bad?
Thanks,
Peg
Adult Summer Reading Program
Adult Summer Reading Instructions for Staff
- Patrons will choose to participate Online or via Paper Logs for the 2020 adult summer reading program. Patrons should not do both.
- To participate Online, patrons should:
- Search for “Reader Zone” app at their device app store (i.e. Apple Store or Google Play).
- Install the app on their Android, Apple, or Amazon device.
- Make an account, enter program code 5f6b5, and select the program(s) they would like to join.
- Track what they read or listen to through the app.
- For each book completed, patrons will earn one entry into the JPL Adult Summer Reading prize drawings. There is no need to turn anything in to JPL.
- To participate via Paper Logs, patrons should:
- Pickup a reading log at the library during open hours beginning May 30th or access the ASR webpage and print one at home.
- Log the books they read or listen to.
- Turn in their completed logs at the outdoor summer reading drop-box located by the main entryway of JPL. For each completed log, patrons will earn one entry into the JPL Adult Summer Reading prize drawings.
- Additional paper logs are available on the ASR webpage.
- All entries will be put into one drawing. Unlike past years, patrons will not get to choose the prize buckets into which to place their tickets.
- The prizes for Adult Summer Reading will be ten – $30 gift cards to local Johnston businesses. Prizes will be drawn after the program ends.
- A new component of 2020’s ASR program is the Read Boldly Genre Challenge. This challenge is optional. To participate in the challenge, patrons should:
- Read one title out of at least 5 genre categories. Categories are defined on the ASR webpage and on the printed bookmark.
- Place a check mark in the box next to the title they have read, or write in the title of a book read that fits the category.
- Once patrons have read one title from 5 genre categories, they should turn in their Read Boldly bookmark at the outdoor summer reading drop-box located by the main exterior doors of JPL.
- Patrons who complete the Read Boldly Genre Challenge will receive $5.00 worth of JPL Bucks for the Foundation & Friends Book Sale.

Willing to share a photo?
I’d like to add a more human-touch to JPL’s Facebook and Instagram posts (yes, Youth Services is all over this, they already post awesome human-touch images), but I’d like to expand it a bit.
Would any or all of you be willing to send me an image of what you’re doing at home during our closure? It could be a stack of the books you’ve read, are reading, want to read; it could be a picture of something personal like your pet, or something you’ve made; maybe an image you capture of nature that makes you happy. I’m open to images that will send a feel-good message. With your permission, I will only use your first name in the post.
Thanks,
Peg
Staff Picks for Kanopy
Hey everybody! How are y’all doing? I am SO GLAD the sun is shining today.
I could use your help promoting Kanopy. Specifically, I would like your suggestions for content to watch. Think of this as Staff Picks for Kanopy. I have no specific deadline, but the sooner you get them to me, the sooner I can start encouraging our patrons to utilize this awesome resource.
Send your suggestions to me at rasmussen@johnstonlibrary.com and I’ll use your recommendations to promote Kanopy on social media.
Stay safe,
Peg

Form 1040 and Instruction Booklets
Our shipments of federal tax forms have arrived. The only two products we have are:
Form 1040 Booklet (form 1040, schedules 1-3 & form 1040-sr) – 250 ordered
Instruction 1040 Booklet for all forms in the 1040 Booklet – 76 ordered
Materials are available at the Ref Desk behind the plant.
Please encourage patrons to take just one of each per household.
Patrons are welcome to make copies of the forms if they’re afraid of making mistakes.
Ice Cream Scoop for Lois
Lois Carpenter, the food editor that taught the Instant Pot class on Saturday, left an ice cream scoop. I left it on the “Holds to Be Shelved” white cart behind the Circulation Desk. She hopes to stop by tomorrow (Sunday) to pick it up.
Tax Forms
I received the following information from the IRS:
Tax Forms Outlet Program (TFOP) Partners
“We expect the shipping of Form 1040 and Instruction 1040 will begin by January 21. Once the shipping process begins, it will take up to three weeks to complete. Products may arrive separately and not on the same day. “
