Patrons returning ILLs( inter-library loans)
When patrons are returning their inter-library loans they are asked to hand the item to a staff person. Please accept the item and check it in at that time ( instead of putting the item in the book drop or on a cart to check in later). Checking it in immediately gives our patrons some peace of mind, knowing that it is off of their accounts. The item can then be placed on the Technical Services shelf near the repair shelf in the work room. Thank you so much for your help in the ILL process.

The Great 2024 Magazine Withdrawal
The highly anticipated magazine withdrawal is about to begin! I am hoping to begin the process during the second week of July. I do have a number of patrons who have already expressed interested in obtaining the withdrawn copies. However, if you have other inquiries, please send contact information and magazine preference to me at: elrick@johnstonlibrary.com. You may also send me a slack or place a note in the basket outside of my cubicle. Please let those asking for magazines know that we may not be able to accommodate all requests, but we will do our best to spread the magazine joy!
New Location for holds for Home Delivery Patrons
All holds for Home Delivery Patrons ( Homebound/Outreach) have been moved from the all-patrons hold shelves to a cart in the Repair area. When checking in, or trapping holds from the pick list for a Home Delivery Patron, a box will pop up showing “Home Delivery Patron” before allowing you to continue. Please place any holds with this pop up box on the cart labeled Home Delivery Patron Holds. The cart is located in the repair area next to check in (Miren’s old area). Thank you!

Withdrawn magazine requests
Lately,we have started receiving requests from those patrons who love to have our withdrawn magazines. TS withdraws older issues of magazines, and in the past this has happened in January. Beginning this year we are moving that process to the month of July.
If you receive requests for withdrawn magazines, you may pass this information on to the patron, or take their contact information and I will email or call them. Thanks for your help!
Adult and YA CD Books and Playaways with matching book club sets moving to workroom
I am in the process of moving any Adult and YA CD books and Playaways that have a matching book club set to the Book Club shelves in the workroom. They will live next to their matching book club set and can be checked out to patrons if they have an “IN” status.
I have updated their call numbers and collection status and have added a Book Club sticker to the spines of the cases, so they should be recognizable at check in. After check in, they can be placed on the book club set cart or the TS shelf.
There may still be some stragglers out there, so at this time, just follow the call number, and they should hopefully be “findable.”
Questions? See Lori E
Thanks!
As you check out ILLs for patrons
Just a friendly reminder that ILLs have a specific due date as shown on the ILL loan band. To help minimize patron confusion on “When is this really due?”, instead of just scanning the barcode as usual, please modify the due date on the patron’s account. Thank you so much for your help with this!
YA CD Books moving to Adult CD Books
The process of integrating the YA CD books into the Adult CD book collection has begun! This will take some time to complete, and in the meantime, may be a bit confusing. As I am relabeling and updating cases, the status will be “Unavailable.” Then I will change the status back to “In” as I reshelve them in their new home.
I have updated the call numbers for the entire YA CD book collection ( CD BOOK-F-AUTHOR-YA). So if you are looking for a specific CD Book, you may have to look in both locations ( or check the history [red/yellow arrow icons] on Item record page. Those that were previously unavailable and are now “IN” will now be shelved with the Adult CD Books.
Confused? Questions? Come and see me!
Thanks!
How would you like to be notified?
Thank you for assisting our patrons in placing ILL and purchase requests. We receive positive feedback on how much this service is appreciated.
After placing the request information, please consider verifying the patron’s preferred choice of notification. Often when a hold is not picked up, it is due to an outdated phone number or email address. This last step will ensure that they are notified as soon as the item is available. Thank you !
Let’s talk trash!
Let’s talk TRASH! Or at least where to put our trash at JPL. We are making a few changes in hopes to keep our recycling and trash where it needs to be. Here are some basic guidelines.
*Paper without personal information can be placed in blue recycling trash bins, found soon at most desk areas.
*Paper containing personal information should go into the shredding bins located back of the circulation desk.
*Cardboard should be broken down and placed in the top bin of the 2-bin recycling cart located near the staff entrance. Full? See one of our friendly TS staff for assistance.
*Withdrawn books that are not in good condition for Better World Book donations or our book sale room should go in the bottom bin of the 2-bin recycling cart located near the staff entrance. Full? See one of our friendly TS staff for assistance.
*Non-functioning library equipment can be directed to Lori F.
*Larger trash, such as broken chairs, plastic containers, or items that do not fit in our regular trash cans can be taken directly to the dumpster or placed in the larger trash cans in the janitor’s closet. Ask a friendly TS staff member for help!
*At this time JPL does not offer glass, plastic, or metal recycling. Please recycle these items at home.
*We are asking that the gray utility cart near the staff entrance now be left free of any recycling or garbage., so that it can be used by all staff , without needing to first clear it off.
Please see Lori E with any comments or questions.
Thanks!
Lonely Readers February ILL Book

The books are automatically set to check out for 6 weeks, which makes them due on 3/7/23, ( a day before the normal due date). Please remind patrons to return the books to a staff member and to leave the ILL borrowing band on . Please placed returned books on the Lonely Reader Shelf. Thank you so much for your help!

ILL Requests for Series/Seasons
Thank you so much for all the help you give to our patrons in ordering ILLs. We get a lot of positive feedback and appreciation for this service!
When a patron wishes to read a whole series or watch multiple seasons of a show, it is very helpful to place these holds individually ( by title or single season). For instance, instead of placing a request for The Office: seasons 1-3 as one single ILL request, place three separate requests. Understandably, this can be very time consuming. No problem, just send Lori E an email or a note and I will place them for you!
Because we can never predict when a borrowed item will arrive, or how long we can keep it, it is helpful to know if the patron would like to receive the items in a specific order and/or paced time frame. We will do our best to accommodate those requests.
Lastly, while you have the patron in front of you, perhaps verify their preferred method and accuracy of notification. It’s sad to see an ILL go unclaimed. Questions? Ask Lori E or anyone in TS. We are happy to help!
Thank you again!
Vase donations needed
Do you have any extra vases that you would love to re-home (donate)?
The JPL Adult Craft class is looking for vases to up-cycle in our January class. Please bring vases of any size and type of material ( glass, ceramic, wood, metal, etc.) to the break room by 1/21/23 and place them in the bin marked VASES.
If you have any questions, please ask Lori El or Riddhi. Thank you in advance!
Book Club FAQ Handout
A new BOOK CLUB FAQ handout is available at the Circ desk by the JPL book club selections area. Please feel free to give a copy to patrons who are interested in starting a book club or have questions about borrowing book club materials.
As always, TS staff is always happy to assist with requests or questions.
The PDF is also available under Printables/Masters
September Book Page
The September issue of Book Page has been delayed until on or around September 9th. I will distribute it as soon as it comes in. Thanks!
Craft Take and Make Kits
If anyone asks about picking up a craft kit from Saturday’s craft class, please direct them to the PS ( Info) desk. The labeled bags are in a basket behind the desk.
Thank you!
New Vac for Staff Use
Eric has purchased a new vac for staff use. Who doesn’t love a new VAC?! It is located in the break room. Feel free to use it, and out of courtesy, please empty the canister after each use.
