Magic Flute matinee

The Magic Flute
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Des Moines Metro Opera, and this organization and the Des Moines Symphony are collaborating together and performing W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Concerts at the Civic Center are Saturday March 5th at 7:30 PM, and Sunday March 6th at 2 PM at the Civic Center. If you know any students in the DSM area, we are performing act one on Monday March 7th as a student matinee at 11 AM.

Recipe for Chocolate mint brownie cookies
Chocolate Mint Brownie Cookies
1 devil’s food cake mix
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
3 Tablespoons water
1 10 oz. package mint or peppermint bark chocolate chips
Mix first four ingredients together. Add chips. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 9 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

We are playing Lyric for Strings by George Walker, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The concertmaster, principal cellist, and Drake piano professor will be the soloists in the Beethoven.
Symphony and the Beatles

St. Ambrose performance
I will be playing a requiem with a Drake alumni choir on Sunday October 3rd at 3 PM at St. Ambrose Cathedral in downtown Des Moines. It’s free and open to the public.

All Des Moines Symphony Masterworks performances will be livestreamed this season (along with having a live audience), and here is a link to purchase access to Masterworks 1. We are playing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Egmont Overture, John Corigliano’s Promenade Overture, Piano Concerto in one movement by Florence Price, and Hector Berlioz’s Hungarian March. Waterworks pops this weekend
Final reminder about the FREE symphony pops concerts this weekend at Waterworks Park near Gray’s Lake. Saturday the 4th at 7:30 with Aretha Franklin music, and Sunday the 5th at 7:30 with John Williams music.

I had a Panera snack with Abbi Waugh, former JPL librarian yesterday, and she said to tell everyone hello. She is enjoying working at the downtown library in the tech services department, and her daughter Eleanor starts school at the downtown school this week.

Pleasant Hill closure
The Pleasant Hill Public Library will be closed from August 9-29 due to the installation of a new HVAC unit. Curbside will be available from 4-6 PM weekdays during that time.
