Public Internet Is Back!
CenturyLink is experiencing service outages in our area, so the public Internet is currently not available. CenturyLink reports that it could take 24-48 hours to restore service.
Patrons can still use the public PCs to print, type a document, or play Solitaire. You will need to issue a guest pass.
Update: It was a short 24 hours. Internet service for the public has been restored.
June Circulation
June circulation totalled 34,221–3% more than the highest on record. At their meetings each month, I share with the board the numerous comments we receive from patrons about their appreciation of JPL staff. We should all be proud of the service we provide that keeps patrons coming back.
Public Bulletin Board / Pamphlets
Lori French is now responsible for updating the public bulletin board and display case of pamphlets. Please place posters, flyers, pamphlets, etc. on the bottom shelf of the flat black cart in the check-in area.
ILL Red Crate Now on TS Processing Table
I moved the ILL red crate from Molly’s office to the TS processing table (where we receive packages).

Staff Night Out – Jazz in July this Sunday the 12th
Molly Mauer (JPL’s new Assistant Director) and her husband, Ben, will be joining us at JPL’s Staff Night Out this coming Sunday, July 12th at Greenwood Park.
Maurine’s Address
Before Maurine left this morning I had her update her Polaris account with her new address.
The Xeriox Printer Is Back Online
You can once again resume printing to the Xerox printer. It was just feeling a little sad about Maurine’s departure and needed some TLC.
Xerox Printer Currently Not Available
The Xerox printer is not currently working. Please direct your print projects to another printer or hold off until the printer is fixed (later today).
If you need help sending a project to a different printer, let me know.
Thanks for your patience.
Printable PTO Forms
PTO/Leave Request forms are now accessible via the Printables menu. Please print more if the supply kept with the timesheets runs out.
Sheila’s new email address
Sheila’s email address is now olson@johnstonlibary.com. Please update your things.
Leave/PTO Request Forms
Some notes about the leave/PTO request forms:
- The forms are no longer the triplicate, pink, yellow, and white forms we’ve been using. They’re one sheet. Staff will not receive a copy of their approved leave request form. A sheet detailing each staff members PTO usage and accrual is kept in the black folder with the leave request forms.
- Staff who do not accrue PTO can request unpaid timeoff by contacting their supervisor (they do not need to complete a leave request form).
Desk Stats – Revised
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
I’ve revised the paper Desk/Reference Stat Form and made it available via the intranet under the “Printables” menu. This is a new version the sheet located at each desk that has been used to record patron interactions.
As I mentioned at the staff meeting yesterday, we’ll begin using the overlay in the bottom right corner of the intranet on Wednesday, July 1 to record these interactions. Stats can either be entered into the intranet as patron interactions occur or recorded on the new paper Desk/Reference Stat form to be entered into the intranet at a later time.
Please take a look at the instructions under the “help” in the upper right corner of the overlay. Please also review the stat categories (they’re quite different than those we’ve been recording) and let me know if you have questions or suggestions for better phrasing.
Ebook Consortium Merger – WILBOR + NEIBORS
From the State Library:
In the interest of bringing the best service to our customers, the Iowa library community, we have merged the two existing downloadable eBook and audiobook consortia, WILBOR and NEIBORS, into one system. We have named this new consortium “Bridges: Iowa’s eLibrary”. It will provide the same eBook and audiobook service that you have come to expect from OverDrive. Iowa Library Services has signed a 6 year contract with OverDrive to provide this service. We anticipate Bri dges will launch by July 20, 2015. Both NEIBORS & WILBOR sites will be fully functional until then. There will be no gap in service.
FAQ’s for Bridges: Iowa’s eLibrary are available here: http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/ld/c-d/download/bridges/bridges-faq

Public Services Librarian Posting
The Public Services Librarian position has been posted on the bulletin board by the staff mailboxes.
Cheryl
Cheryl Heid has accepted the Library Director position at the Grimes Public Library. Her last day at JPL will be Friday, July 10th. Her work ethic, humor, and experience will be greatly missed. Information on going-away proceedings forthcoming.
Staff Meeting Minutes + Laptops
Our staff meeting will be held this Thursday at 8am.
We are in need of one or two additional laptops for the staff meeting. If you have one you can bring let me know.
This Saturday – Green Days
Just a reminder that while the Library will not be open for regular service on Saturday June 20, all staff will still be working their regular schedules that day as we will be helping with the Green Days crafts from 1:00-4:00. Staff should come in at your regularly scheduled time and work on your regularly assigned activities until such time as you might be needed in the meeting room. Circulation staff should empty the book drop and begin check in (Dreama will give you instruction about the handling of holds).
