What Type of ID Do I Need to Vote and Other Early Voting Questions

Hey All,

I know all of us have been fielding a lot of voting question phone calls. Here is some additional information to fill in some of the gaps:

  • Anyone who lives in Polk County is able to vote at any Polk County satellite voting location. If Johnston is not their district, more than likely they will be casting their ballot electronically.
  • Most registered voters will not be asked to show ID. There are possible exceptions to this and more info can be found here at Vote411: http://www.vote411.org/search-by-topic?topics_tid%5B%5D=58&field_state_tid%5B%5D=16#.WAZSgWYrKUl
  • Non-registered voters can register on the day of and vote at a satellite location. Non-registered voters will be asked to provide photo ID and proof of address. Again, details can be found here at Vote 411: http://www.vote411.org/search-by-topic?topics_tid%5B%5D=58&field_state_tid%5B%5D=16#.WAZSgWYrKUl
  • Voters who are changing their address will  be asked to verbally provide their new address.

A note on the dumpsters

The library has two dumpsters: one for recycling paper products; the other for trash.

  • Please put all cardboard and paper in the right dumpster
  • Please put all trash in the left dumpster

YS shelves

We are going to “curate” what books we put on top of the bookshelves in the YS area. We’ve limited the number and are also going to be selective about what books are displayed.  YS staff will assume the responsiblity of placing books on the top of the shelves.

Thursday Night Book Club next week (October 13)

Hey all,

Next week is the normal time for the Thursday Night Book Club to meet. I will be in exotic Dubuqe for ILA and one of my book club members, Sue R. is going to facilitate discussion in my absence. I am going to direct book club members to come to the circulation desk Thursday night, October 13 to check out next month’s book, instead of me doing it for them.

Here’s what you need to know if you are working on October 13th in the evening:

The November book club book is Plainsong, by Kent Haruf. These books will be ready and waiting on the black cart for check out. Please give book club members an extended checkout date until the third Thursday of November. (The book will be due November 17th) and sigage on the black cart will remind you of this date.

Thanks so much for holding down the fort. Ask Beth if you have any questions.

Kinney’s Last Day Trivia

If anyone is interested, a group of us were thinking of going to Felix & Oscars Trivia this Friday, being that its Kinney’s last day at Johnston.

Trivia starts at 9, but I’ll be there by 8:30 PM to get a table. Let me know if you are planning to go so I can get a table that fits everyone. There is a game at 9 and another at 10. The games last about 45-50 minutes. There are half price appetizers and 2 for 1 drinks starting at 9:00 PM.

September Board Meeting Recap

The Library Board met last Thursday. I’ve highlighted some of what was discussed below.

  • Per the city ordinance, the library must submit an annual report to the city council after the end of each fiscal year. Kelly McAlister, the board president, presented this year’s report Monday. Links to the report and presentation are included below.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6lTezDMYi83cWxTTVgwa0g2M00/view?usp=sharing

  • Foundation Board member Linda Kading recently retired and is moving from Johnston. We’ve found two new residents willing to serve: Rebecca Janni and Heidi Kroner. Rebecca is a teacher and children’s author who has done a number of book readings for the library’s Youth Services department. Heidi is founder of Literacy Lifeline, “a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for families and people in need of assistance in their pursuit of grade-level reading, writing and spelling.” Their first meeting will be November 2nd. The Foundation is excited to have them aboard.
  • Members of the MagNet digital magazine consortium—which includes Ankeny, Urbandale, Norwalk, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Bondurant, Indianola, Winterset, and Grimes—met recently to discuss our annual renewal. At this meeting, we look at the past years’ circulation numbers and decide which subscriptions to drop and which to add. The Altoona Public Library is a new member this year. With this additional funding, we’ll likely add several new subscriptions.
