Staff Training Opportunity
Wednesday, November 30 at 8 a.m. we will be hosting 10 students from Harding Middle School for a roundtable discussion about building positive experiences and interactions with teens. It should take about an hour. This training is mandatory for Circulation Staff; those from other departments should see their supervisor if they would like to attend.
Timesheets Due
Quick reminder to complete and turn-in your timesheet today.
Thanks,
Peg
Congrats to Sheila!
Sheila has been offered a full time position at the Altoona Public Library. We’re very happy for her but will be sad to see her go. She’ll be around a few more weeks.
Jeans Thursday
Tomorow is the library’s last open day before the weekend. I think that technically qualifies as a casual day. Feel free to wear jeans tomorrow.
Building Clocks
I reset the system clocks this morning, but it will take up to 24 hours for them to reflect the correct time.
Printing Cardstock on the Staffworkroom Zerox
Hey all,
When you are printing cardstock to the staff workroom printer you need to designate cardstock as the papertype on your computer, send it through the bypass tray (tray 5), and when you put paper into the printer, confirm on the printer that the paper in tray 5 is also cardstock. When you do these things, your images will come out non-smeary.
For the Last Time, Google Is Not Our Competition!
For the last time, Google is NOT our competition in libraries …
Staff Internet provider change tomorrow
Tomorrow at noon, the City of Johnston will change Internet providers. This change will only affect staff Internet. It should not affect checking in and out via Polaris but other Internet-reliant tasks may be disrupted. I’ll be doing my best to work with database and other vendors tomorrow to ensure as little downtime as possible. I’ve included the message from city hall below.
Good Morning,
Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2, we will be changing internet providers. This will entail switching out some equipment and will cause a disruption in service. In order to minimize the impact this has, we will begin the outage at noon tomorrow. We anticipate downtime to be about an hour. While email will be impacted by the internet outage, this should have no impact on the phone system or the network, just the internet. If you have internet specific tasks that you are responsible for, please keep the noon outage time in mind.
For those of you who receive city email on your cell phone, this switch may necessitate making a change to your email setup. Please contact Scott Richmann or myself and we can help facilitate that change.
Thanks for your patience while we work to improve our internet speed and reliability.
Please let me know if you have issues or concerns relating to this planned outage.

New small vacuum/dustbuster
We have a new lightweight, cordless vacuum/dustbuster behind the shredder. This is a replacement for YS’s junky carpet sweeper things but all departments are free to use it for small messes.
Write All Night this Friday, November 4 from 5:30pm to Midnight
Write All Night is this Friday, November 4 from 5:30pm to Midnight. Central Iowa Authors will be in the Large Meeting Room doing timed writing sprints as part of National Novel Writing Month, but the rest of the library will be open and available as well for people who want to find a quiet corner and read, write or study. Public computers and printing will be available, but the library (me) will not be checking out items on this night.
Thanks. Ask Beth if you have questions.
Early Voting at Polk County Election Office
Hey all,
Satellite voting is over. If Polk County voters wish to vote early in person they need to go to the Polk County Election office, located at 120 2nd Avenue in downtown Des Moines. The Polk County Election office will be open 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday through November 7, as well as Saturday, November 5.
New e-Newsletter available on New Website
Hello All,
Once the new JPL website is live, patrons will have the option to opt-in to a weekly e-newsletter sent out by the library. The newsletter will feature 3 or 4 must-know-about programs happening in the next calendar week, (for kids, teens and adults) and/or resources that the library offers. When you talk to patrons about the e-newsletter you can “sell” it as a weekly dose of must-have info about JPL happenings in tasty bitesize portions. (Ok, this sounds like something I would say, but you get the idea). Once the site is live and we are settled in, the e-newsletter will be sent out every Thursday.
Erika is going to be putting out information to Circ people on the Circ newsletter about how this affects the Circ Department, but the gist of it is that patrons can sign up to receive an e-newsletter at the footer of our new webiste. Looks like this:
Book Page
Do you enjoy perusing through Book Page (the free bookish newspaper we receive at JPL)? Would you like a copy hand-delivered to you or your mailbox? Tech Services is compiling a routing list, so let us know if you want to be on it. We will ensure you receive your copy upon Book Page’s arrival. Happy reading!

Juvenile Fiction shelf location “storage”
There is a small, temporary collection housed in Molly’s office of Juv. Fiction, with a shelf location of “storage”. Books may be circulated from this location. They are on the shelves behind Molly’s desk, in order as they would be on the shelves.
JPL Art Gallery
Erika has been assigned art gallery and display case scheduling duties. She will do a great job. Please direct questions about either to Erika.

For those who attended the digital conference today and are looking to use it for credit hours, I have the certificates for all but the final keynote speaker. Send me an e-mail at
