Concrete Grinding Friday
Public Works staff will be here Friday morning to grind some concrete in the large meeting room where the wall is currently dragging along the ground. Expect an hour or so of annoying noise.

West Patio Update
The shade installers are currently creating footings for the shade structure. Once the footings are in and have cured, they’ll install the structures legs. Once that’s done, the concrete company will come back to pour the patio. It may be up to two weeks before the patio is reopened.
All-Staff Meeting Thursday
Our bi-monthly all-staff meeting will be held this Thursday at 8:00am in the Large Meeting Room.
All-Staff Meeting Next Thursday
Molly and I will be out of town this Thursday so our all-staff meeting will be held next Thursday, June 30th at 8am.
Kinney Carnahan
Kinney Carnahan, JPL children’s librarian from 1992 to 2016, passed away last week. I’ve placed an envelope on the magnet board in the break room if you’d like to contribute to sending flowers to her service which will be held next Thursday at 11am at New Hope Methodist Church.
West Patio
Tear-out and replacement of the west patio concrete will start next week. The shade structure will be installed soon after.
Clocks
Our replacement clocks have finally arrived. Assuming they’re going to work, they should show the correct time before we open tomorrow.
Board Member Leaving + New Board Member
This month’s library board meeting will be the last for Megan Tooker. Emily Betz will start her six year term on the board in July. Emily grew up in Johnston and has been a longtime library user. She worked at the Grimes Public Library from 2010 to 2012. She is currently Business Liaison for Des Moines Area Community College.
J and YA Donations
I’ve created a Facebook post asking for donations of used J and YA books to give away at outreach events this summer. Until further notice, please put donations of books for kids and teens in the box marked for them next to the food donation bin.
Art walk paintings
Artists will be dropping off their art walk paintings over the next couple of weeks. They can be placed in my office.

Extra hours with the Parks Department
The Parks Department has asked me to check if any part-time library staff would like a few extra hours helping with senior programming at Crown Point. They’re looking for help Thursday and Friday from 3pm-5pm and possibly some weekend hours. Let me know if you’re interested.
[UPDATED] Community Survey Results
UDPATE Responses to the survey’s open-ended questions are here
Every couple of years the city’s Communication Specialist organizes a survey of Johnston residents. I’ve linked to the 2022 results below. The summary of library-related findings, which is very similar to the 2020 summary, is included below. Complete library-related results are on pages 24-27.
Library Services. Residents were generally satisfied with the overall quality of library services provided.
Ninety-four percent (94%) of the residents surveyed, who had an opinion, were “very satisfied” and
“satisfied” with the Johnston Public Library; 92% were satisfied with the quality of library materials,
books, DVDs magazines and etc., and 88% were satisfied with the quality of library programs, story hours
and book discussions.
Sixty-three percent (63%) of respondents indicated they had visited the Johnston Public Library
in the past year.

Terra Park Art Walk Board Pick Up
The Johnston Arts Council is hosting an outdoor art walk this summer at Terra Park. The library is the pick-up and drop off site for the boards registrants will paint on. I’ve placed a list of registrants near the boards at the checkout desk. Each registrant gets one board. Mark the names off the list once they pick up their board.
Free Summer Lunch Sites
The Johnston Community School District is offering free meals this summer. This program runs from June 6 to Aug. 5. Anyone under the age of 18, regardless of whether they live in Johnston or not, is eligible for a free meal. Adults who want to participate will have to pay $3.95 per meal.
The meals must be eaten on site: there are no grab-and-go options.
Locations:
- Sterling Point at 7370 62nd Ave NW, which is open from 11 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
- Chapel Ridge at 6200 Clark Ln, which is open from 12 p.m.-12:30 p.m.
West Patio
Before the shade structure on the west patio can be installed, the concrete there needs replaced–the current concrete pad is too out-of-level for proper installation of the structure. That work will likely start in the next couple of weeks–maybe as soon as next week.
Open Tomorrow
We will be open tomorrow. The high is forecast as 81 so it should be significantly cooler in the building.
Chiller repairs
The parts we’ve been waiting for to repair the chiller have not arrived but work will begin on Monday. The contractor is hoping the parts will arrive next week.
