Simplex Alarm – Storage Room

Today the Simplex alarm started going off about every 5 minutes alerting us that the smoke detector in the storage room of the meeting room is dirty. Eric stopped in and cleaned it out. Hopefully that takes care of the problem.

We are starting a new summer series in July at Lauridsen Ampitheater at Waterworks Park in Des Moines, and we are performing on July 14th and 28th, each at 7:30 PM.  Those concerts are free too, so I hope you all can make it.  https://dmsymphony.org/events/renee-elise-goldsberry/.     https://dmsymphony.org/events/renee-elise-goldsberry/.

Wallet found 6/22/19

Keegan Oppewall’s wallet with his ID & JPL card (no money) was found today near the self-check-out. The phone # on file didn’t work so I emailed the email address on file. It is locked up where we keep the money drawers. I asked him to bring another form of ID (if possible, since we have his).

Smoke Detector

The smoke detector closest to the staff entrance has gone bad. As we wait for a replacement, the fire panels by the staff door and the main entrance may beep (the guy said only once every 24 hours). Press the ACK button to silence the beeping.

Building Temps

I know it’s been hot and humid in the building. The work required to update the software that controls our HVAC will be complete by 7/1. This should make temps in the building much more consistent.

“My First Library Card” Prop [UPDATED]

There is a new prop on the ledge behind the checkout desk for parents/guardians to take a picture of their child after getting their first library card. If you get the sense that the parent wants to make a big deal out of their child getting their first library card, offer the parent the chance to get their child’s picture with the sign. When not in use, it will sit on the ledge on an easel.

Color-Coded Beginning Readers

Beginning readers will now be color-coded according to reading level. You’ll see new books with a colored label under the spine label. Eventually, we’ll re-do all beginning readers to match this new system that will make it easier for parents to find books that match their child’s reading level.

The seven levels are:

Red – Reading concepts

Green – Level 2

Public Internet Is Down

Mediacom will send someone on-site to resolve problem with signal. Tech person may be here tonight, but it may be morning before they have someone to send. I’ll have more details in an hour or so.

Folks can use the PCs to create a Word document or print from a flash drive, etc. Anything that doesn’t involve the Internet.

No Internet also means no Wi-Fi. Public catalogs won’t work, but staff can access catalogs and Adventure Passes from staff PCs.

Maisy

From Rachel:

After three long years of yogurt drops and rolling around the library, Maisy the hamster passed away peacefully with a treat between her paws. While her side completely healed as time went on, she started to show her age and wasn’t moving around as easily, or eating as much. In her last few days, I had to feed Maisy by hand as she could no longer reach the inside of her food bowl.

Maisy received a candle-lit funeral and is now buried beside my house next to Sherb.
