I would like to invite you to a Symphony Re-mix taking place on Friday, October 11th starting at 5:30 PM at the Civic Center downtown Des Moines.  There will be free Fong’s Pizza and beverages available for purchase, and an open rehearsal at 7.  We are playing Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorsky, Symphony in Sculpture Suite and Symphony in Scuplture III (world premiere) by Steve Heitzig, and Scheherezade by Nicoli Rimsky-Korsokov.  This event is only for people 21 and over, and it’s free with no reservations required. 

Concerts for this set are on October 12th at 7:30, and October 13th at 2:30 at the Civic Center.

I would like to invite you to the Pleasant Hill Halloween party on Friday, October 18th at the Doanes Park Youth Center in Pleasant Hill.  I and other PH librarians will be helping out, and you all are welcome to come with kids you know.  It is from 6:30-8 PM, and there will be treats and games, and you may wear costumes.  It’s free!

They will be painting the staff side of the parking lot tomorrow beginning at 7:15 a.m. Since we have a staff meeting at 8 a.m. it would be best to park in the east lot. By the time the library opens and meeting ends, we should be okay to move our cars over to the west side of the lot.

The City of Johnston provides residents an opportunity to get rid of branches and limbs each fall. Residents can drop these off, no cost, at the Public Works Facility, located at 6400 NW Beaver Drive between November 7-9. There is no fee; however, participants are asked to bring ID for proof of residency.

Branches should not be larger than 18-inches in diameter. Larger sizes will not be accepted because of their inability to be recycled through the chipper. Residents are asked to have the end cut off their branches stacked at the end of their vehicles for easy removal.

Residents should ensure that their vehicle or trailer is clear of items before loading with branches. Items such as ropes, chains, wire, and fence posts can cause damage to equipment and injury to City staff if pulled into the chipper.

Commercial vehicles and trucks larger than a pickup are prohibited from participating in this clean-up. Tree debris will be turned into mulch. Leaves and grass will not be accepted.

• Thursday, November 7: 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
• Friday, November 8: 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
• Saturday, November 9: 7 a.m. to noon

Update: The 3D model has gone on tour and will be back by this Friday, September 27. The printed overview map is still available by the Brother Printer at the Reference Desk. 

A 3D printed model of the proposed Johnston Town Center project will be on display during the remainder of September at the Johnston Public Library. The model provides a proportional 1/32″ representation of how the Town Center is planned to develop including the City Hall, trailhead, ice rink, and commercial buildings. While commercial building plans are expected to continue to evolve, the eight proposed commercial buildings are shown in their expected locations to help layout the vision for future development.

A groundbreaking for the project is tentatively planned for October 22 and further details will be available at johnstontowncenter.com once details are finalized.

The model is by the Brother printer on the side of the Ref Desk. 

Frequent library user, Michael Lemke, passed away unexpectedly last week. I will put a card in the break room and an envelope if you would like to contribute toward flowers. We heard from his mother last week, and she wanted to make sure that everyone at JPL knew how much Michael enjoyed the library.

Deepa is officially American! She went through her citizenship ceremony yesterday and even registered to vote!

Per the city ordinance, the library must submit an annual report to the city council after the end of each fiscal year. Dan Marvin, the current board president, presented this year’s report a couple of weeks ago. Links to the report and presentation are included below.
