I relabeld the pre-shelving shelves.  All audiobooks go to the left…I labeled everything.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks!

Consumer Reports

The library now has two subscriptions to Consumer Reports. The issues on display in the magazine area may be checked out to patrons while the issues behind the circ desk will have green stickers on them to remind us they are for “In house use only”.

Thank you.

Follow Up to Changes to the Games and Internet PCs

I have changed the PC Reservation validation rules to allow children with “full-service” cards (that is, a parent has signed the library card application) to use the Games PCs even if their cards have expired and/or they owe more than $10.00.

The rules now read:

  • If the patron owes more than $10, restrict usage to the Games PCs.
  • If the patron card has expired, restrict usage to the Games PCs.
  • If the Internet/No Internet area is not equal to Internet, restrict usage to the Games PCs.

Do not issue a second “Games Only” card to a child patron with a “full-services” card.  If his card isn’t allowing him to use the Games PCs, let me know, and I will fix it so it will work.

Changes to the Games and Internet PCs

We’ve made some changes to how the public will use the Games and Internet PCs.  The following changes are effective Monday, May 12:

  • The Games PCs now require a library card or guest card.  Children ages 5 through 14 may now obtain a Games Computers Only library card without parental signature.  Please direct the child to the Circulation Desk to complete the new yellow application form.
  • If a child is visiting friends or relatives and will not be visiting long enough or frequently enough to obtain a library card, you can sign the child on to one of the Games PCs as a guest:  Patron: Games1 / PIN: 6700 or Patron: Games2 / PIN: 6700.  Do not give the information to the child; type the information into the PC Reservation login screen yourself.
  • Guest passes printed from PC Reservation are to be used only for patrons with Internet permission.  A guest pass is valid on all public PCs.  Therefore, it should not be given to Games Only users.
  • The YS 1-5 and Stations 1-12 have now been combined into a single area which means that anyone who has Internet permission may use any of the 17 PCs.  This area is now called Internet PCs.
  • Each user has a total of 90 minutes of PC use per day.  The Internet PC sessions are 90 minutes long, and they may be extended for people working on projects.  The Games PC sessions are 30 minutes long.  A Games PC user can log in multiple times until he has used all 90 minutes.  Children with Internet permission have a total of 90 minutes across both areas.  For example, a child could spend 20 minutes on a Games PC and 70 minutes of an Internet PC.
  • I eliminated the step where users have to Accept the Internet Use Agreement.  Once a patron enters his barcode/PIN, he is taken directly to the PC desktop.

If you have any questions about these changes, please let me know.

KOTG Certificates

All staff – the certificates for the KOTG contest will be kept at circ desk.

The contestants for the kite contest just receive a certificate. They are in one pile.

However, the winners for the Kite Poetry contest all receive a gift cardin addition to the certificate.  There are 3 poetry winners and the gift cards are paperclipped to their certificate.  These are in a separate pile.

I’m going home early.  Call me at 250-1539 with any questions.

New displays and bike passports

Hello Team,

New book displays feature graphic novel/comic books and gardening. The display cases will have a wonderful comic book collection from Richard Collum.

May is National Bike Month and Bike To Work Week is May 12-16. To celebrate bike month the Des Moines Bike Collective gave us bike passports to handout to customers. The bike passports are located at the northend of the circulation desk along with DOT bike maps, bookmarks, and bike safety handouts.

Just like last year, customers will ask us to mark their passport book. I couldn’t find the stamp we used last year so just mark “Johnston Library” and initial it. For more information about Bike Month click on the link below.

Thanks,

Making change

Beginning Tuesday April 29, change for the copier/printer will be given from the cash register.  Enter your ID code and a ‘No sale’  transaction to open the cash drawer.  Public Services should direct anyone needing change to the Circulation desk as the blue Public Services change bag is no longer available.

Additional change is also still available from the black change bag in Maurine’s desk and can be used if you need change for the Foundation bag.   Please do not make Foundation change from the cash register.

Please see Dreama or Maurine if you have questions about making or giving change.
