July Library Board Meeting Recap

The Library Board met last Wednesday. This was the first meeting for Megan Tooker, one of our two new board members. Dan Marvin, our other new board member and library volunteer, was out of town and will attend his first meeting in August.
We presented a revised Conduct in the Library policy for approval with the following explanation:

Our current conduct in the library policy does a good job defining unacceptable behavior but not in defining how staff ought to respond. The proposed policy defines consequences for the most common behavioral issues we see in hopes of promoting consistent responses from staff while leaving some leeway for judgement. The policy also outlines escalation of consequences for subsequent offences and dictates that minors’ caregivers be contacted upon each violation—neither of which we have or do now.

The board suggested the list of behaviors included in the proposed policy would make more sense in a procedural, as opposed to a policy, document. The committee that helped draft the proposed policy–which includes Molly, staff from Youth Services and Public Services, and myself—will meet again to discuss redrafting the policy and moving the behavior list to a procedural document.
I updated the board on our new hire, Valerie Welch, who has experience at circulation and reference at the Kirkendall Public Library and recently started as Circulation Clerk. I also mentioned that Karla will retire in September.
I also updated the board on our going “live” with the 8mm and Super8 film scanner, which Peg will discuss in more detail at Thursday’s staff meeting, and the status of and plans for the book bike.
