Johnston City Administrator Jim Sanders was recently awarded City Manager of the Year at the Iowa League of Cities annual conference. The Johnston Police Department, Mayor and City Council commended Officer Petermeier with a Certificate of Commendation during the City Council meeting on Monday, September 20. On April 4, 2021, Officer Petermeier was on patrol when dispatched to a local apartment for a stabbing. Upon his arrival at the scene, he located a victim with a large stab wound to his back. Officer Petermeier recognized the severity and complexity of the injury, which could have been fatal if left untreated due to a possible punctured lung. Based on his law enforcement and military training, he took decisive action to clean the wound and apply a self-venting chest seal. This helped stabilize the wound and may have saved the victim’s life. >> Read more
The Johnston Police Department welcomes its newest member, Officer Hayes. Mayor Dierenfeld swore him in during the City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 20. Officer Hayes was previously with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in northern Minnesota. Prior to the Sheriff’s office, he served as a Community Service Officer, Reserve Police Officer, and Code enforcement intern in a Twin Cities suburb. He comes to the Johnston Police Department with more than four years of experience. >>Learn more
The Johnston Police Department, Mayor and City Council commended Officer Johnston with a letter of appreciation for his dedication to proactive police interventions during the City Council meeting on Monday, September 20.
He was also recognized during a luncheon by the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force. He was nominated for his commitment to traffic safety, by completing over 90 arrests, resulting from traffic enforcement, during the past fiscal year. >> Learn more
Building Inspector II, John Taylor’s last day with the City of Johnston is Friday, Oct. 1. John has proudly served the City since 1998 (23 years).
He will be moving up north for a job opportunity in Minnesota. We wish him the best in his new endeavor.

Congratulations to Lt. Burns and his wife on the birth of their daughter Harper Burns. She was born on September 11 at 6:37 a.m. She weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz. and was 19” long. Lt. Burns part-time with the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department.
Free Flu Shots for Johnston Employees
City of Johnston employees and family members are eligible a free flu shot at the Johnston Hy-Vee (5750 Merle Hay Rd). Stop into the break room at City Hall and pick up a voucher. Bring the filled out voucher to the pharmacy and receive a free flu shot. This offer is available until November 30. Hours for flu shots are: Sunday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday – Friday 9 a.m.- 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.
