At yesterday’s staff meeting I introduced an exciting project that will be completed this fall. As you know, the library currently lacks a space to conduct hands-on, technology-related programs for small groups. The library’s teen users are similarly without a dedicated space for doing homework, working with technology, and hanging-out with peers. The Johnston Public Library Foundation has committed funds for construction of a glass-walled space dedicated to teens and technology programming in the northeast corner of the Youth Services area. This space will provide a home not only for the library’s teens but also for programs like our Scratch Club, where kids learn computer programming concepts using drag-and-drop tools; our Take-Apart Tuesdays, where kids take apart electronics to discover how they’re put together and how they work; and a variety of computer classes for teens, children, and seniors and other adults. The space will contain new tables and lounge furniture, whiteboards, and a ceiling-mounted TV for presentations. A video is embedded below (but may not be viewable via an email message). Please let me know if you have questions.
